Pros and Cons Of Using A Texturizer

If you have curly hair, then you might have at one point decided to try a texturizer. But is using a texturizer the best option for your hair? What are the benefits and drawbacks of using an s curl texturizer? While this piece will not focus on giving you tips for texturizing, it will let you know the good, the bad and the useful facts about texturizers.

Benefits of using an S Curl Texturizer for Men

Increases The Manageability of Your Hair

One of reasons a lot of guys choose to put a texturizer in their hair is to simply make their hair curlier. The added benefit to a texturizer is that is makes your hair a lot more manageable, especially if you have really thick and coarse hair. The texturizer relaxes your strands to make your hair easier to manipulate, making hairstyles look more sleek and neat. When I wake up and get ready for the day, it usually takes me no more than 3 minutes to create the hairstyle I want when I have a texturizer in my hair. Without one, it takes about 10-15 minutes to get my hair to a point where I like it enough to go out in public. All of this, of course, is subjective and depends on the person and how they like their hair. But the bottom line is, if you have thick hair like me, a texturizer can give you a few extra minutes to do something else in the morning while you’re getting ready.

Chemicals Are Not As Harsh

For one thing, a texturizer works much like a perm, only, the chemicals in a S curl texturizer are not as strong as a relaxer or perm. It’s just enough to give your hair a curl rather than straightening it completely. The most important thing to remember in this case though is not to leave the texturizer in your hair too long, or eventually the product will take on the effects of a perm and make your hair more straight than curly.

Does NOT Stop Hair Growth

A big misconception about texturizers is that once you put one in your hair, it stops your hair growth. Your hair will always continue to grow and a texturizer will not stop that. If your hair does stop growing, it’s for other reasons, not the texturizer.

Makes Your Hair Appear Longer On Initial Use

Texturizers are meant to make your hair curly, but an added bonus to using them is that on initial use, it makes your hair appear longer. This is especially noticeable is you have compact hair and can only see growth if you stretch it out. The chemical in the texturizer is meant to relax your hair, which lays it down, and shows its true length.

It’s Not Permanent

When I say not permanent, I don’t mean in the sense that you can take the texturizer out of your hair. But that once you texturize your hair, natural hair will still grow from your roots, which many people don’t believe. You can get to a point where you have more natural hair on your head than you do texturized hair. It works the same way as perm or dye.

Disadvantages of Using an S curl

Chemicals Are Bad For Your Hair

Any chemical, whether you’re dying your hair, perming, or texturize is not good for it.  Chemicals alter the natural make up of your hair, which can cause it to fall out. Just like anything unnatural for your body, it causes wear and tear.

Leaves Scalp Dry

If not taken care of properly, an S curl can leave your hair dry and flaky. It’s important that you moisturize as needed to keep your scalp from itching.

Hair Strands Get Weaker

When applying a chemical to your hair, it breaks down your hair strands to alter it for how you would like to style it. This results in making your strands weaker. Stripping it from it’s natural oils and protection.

Possibly Changes The Color Of Your Hair

If you have black hair and continuously use a texturizer, you might begin to notice that your hair is not as black anymore and has turned a dark burgundy/brown color. This is due to your hair constantly being processed by a chemical and as a result looses its color.

Can Cause Breakage

Applying products to your hair, especially ones with chemicals can cause split ends. It goes back to all of the other cons on this list. Your hair strands get weaker, and your scalp gets dry so it’s easy for your hair to break off or shed continuously. Hair breakage is a sign of damaged or hair that isn’t being taken care of.

All in all, texturizers damage your hair. It requires you to show extra attention to hair care. You should only apply one if you have the patience and dedication for the maintenance.
